Food or Foe?

by Lonnie Mackley

JN 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

One of the main problems with a food addiction is that you have to wear your addiction around for all to see and judge you. Most other addictions you can hide to some degree for a while, but eventually the signs show up with them as well. Now granted, some people are overweight because they have a thyroid or P.C.O.S. problem so their bodies turn everything into fat. But if we are overweight simply because of eating too much, or exercising too little, then people look at us with resentful, judgmental, and envious eyes because they are angry that we are doing what they secretly want to do, which is overeat; so they persecute us.

GAL 5:25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Food may seem like our best friend when we are in pain because it appears to give us instant controllable pleasure, but like all other addictions the more you do it, the more pain it creates, and the more you have to keep doing it in order to counteract the increasing pain that it's generating. The answer to overcoming this addiction is like any other addiction, you just give it to God "as is", and then ask Him to start helping you. God will then give you a revelation of the truth concerning food and the proper care of your body, and then you will progressively replace the lie with the truth concerning food and step into health and peace.

GAL 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Ask the Holy Spirit to give you better self-control since it is one of the fruits of the Spirit and He will begin talking to, and counseling you about the roots of what has been fueling your food addiction. And as He heals you then you just gradually will not need the food as much and your needs will be met through God instead of food. Exercise can just start with walking in a circle inside your home if need be, but also give your exercise program to the supervision of the Holy Spirit and He will show you what will actually work for you. So take hope that you can live at a normal weight with God's help, and food will just become fuel.

PHP 4:13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
