"Not Feeling Anything"

by Lonnie Mackley

PR 31:6 Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish; 7 let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more.

Many times in life we can incur so much emotional pain that we just don't want to "feel" anything anymore. We then work hard to control every area of our lives either with drugs, pleasure, or being controlling of those around us. We have become a slave to fear and the more we think we are taking control of things, the more that fear takes control of us and cheats us out of everything good in life that we normally have by simply just trusting God.

The problem with deadening all our feelings is that we cannot experience much real joy or necessary good feelings because the drugs and fear hinder us from having any genuine happy emotions. We all have emotional needs in order to be happy in life and when we cut ourselves off from those necessary good emotions we can drive ourselves into even deeper addiction to try to find them again. Addiction usually just amplifies our negative emotions.

Letting go of your addiction will likely mean feeling strong emotions again both good and bad. This will take a lot of trust in God to not only face your past unhealed emotional pain, but also to feel true feelings of real happiness and joy once again. Controlling your life and feelings with addiction may seem like a good idea, but it actually just cuts you off from the good emotions that you need. Pray when you are afraid and ask God to bring true healing.

PS 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
