Acronym For Drug Addiction Recovery

JN 8:34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.

When we serve a drug addiction we become a slave to it and most drugs come from either plants or synthetic chemicals, so basically our God becomes a plant or a chemical. We are allowing a plant to control and destroy our life. Below is an acronym to remember when you are getting free from drug addiction that can help you through times of temptation to relapse.

D.R.U.G.S.

D- Damages and destroys your body.

Drugs always degrade, damage, and progressively destroy your body and its ability to function normally at its best efficiency. You may feel like it's more, but it's actually less.

R- Ruins relationships.

When we are doing drugs we tend to be more emotional and less self-controlled, so we may either vent our resentments, or pull on people for more than they should really give us.

U- Unnatural and unnecessary.

We train our bodies to accept drugs, but unless you are treating a true physical ailment as prescribed by a doctor, drugs are unnatural and unnecessary to our normal ability to live.

G- Gives power to other addictions.

Like I mentioned above, drugs weaken and degrade our self-control and ability to say no to other addictions like sexual addictions or profanity. Drugs open the door for other addictions.

S- Sin that can damn you.

Whether we believe it or not, drunkenness or living habitually intoxicated and chemically impaired is a sin that God disqualifies us for as far as potential long term kingdom citizens.

So when you quit doing drugs you must be armed with the truth or you will relapse once the withdrawals get tough. Using the above acronym can help you to remember why you have quit and inspire you to just tough out a wave of withdrawals, rather than to give in as usual. In the end it will be a foundation of God's truth that sets you free, and keeps you free.

JN 8:32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

1CO 6:9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 *And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

* You see, some of the above people (including the habitually intoxicated) were these things, but God set them free from it and He will do the same thing for you if you let Him.
