JN 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own;
he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
We as addictive people have developed habits of running to the lie of addiction when we are afraid or bored, and
this can become so ingrained in us that it's very difficult to change. Think about it, every time things gave gotten overwhelming,
what do you run to?; the truth of God's word, or the lie of pleasure addiction? Most of us always run to addiction first;
maybe God second or third. But what the Holy Spirit does is take the old lies of addiction we have believed, and then replaces
them with the truth of God's word so that we can truly change.
JN 17:17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.
We have learned to meet right needs in our lives in wrong ways with things that are very poor substitutes all because
of fear. We don't trust God or people, we only trust in ourselves and in our addictions when things get tough. Instead of
having sex with our mate, we run to pornography and masturbation; instead of real life friends, we run to the TV and the Internet.
Instead of finding true and lasting peace and happiness in life through Jesus, we run to the false peace of addiction, all
because we want to be in control of our pleasure and protection.
PS 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.
When we are feeling fear or pain we must retrain our thoughts and actions to begin to walk in the truth, rather
than in the old lies of addiction that we have gotten so used to. When we want sex we need to have it with our mate or abstain;
when we need friendship we need to run to real local people that we can truly interact with in a healthy way; when we need
peace and joy we need to run to God through prayer and reading the bible, rather than getting high. We must replace all the
old lies and unhealthy habits, with God's truth and healthy habits.
GAL 5:16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
Living by the Spirit means living by God's truth since the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth. The next time you
are in need stop right where you are at and tell yourself God's truth when the old lie pops into your head. In time your habits
will change and you will automatically do what is healthy and natural, rather than running to what is unhealthy and unnatural.
Ask the Spirit of truth to help you to develop new healthy ways of dealing with stress, and He will. In time you will learn
to feed the truth and no longer the lie, and true happiness will be yours!
RO 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.
