Obedience Forward-Addiction Backward

DT 11:26 See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse-- 27 the blessing if you obey the commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today; 28 the curse if you disobey the commands of the LORD your God and turn from the way that I command you today by following other gods, which you have not known

One of the things I have noticed with addiction is that when someone is practicing an addiction they experience continuous loss and restriction, but when they quit all addictions they experience continuous blessing and restoration. Basically addiction keeps you stuck and cursed and it can be so frustrating to try to live your life that way because we were all designed to progress and succeed in life as humans. Conversely, I have noticed that obedience releases people to go forward and that good things seem to accumulate and become restored to them. This would seem like a no brainer right? Just quit your addiction and life will be good instead of bad. But for some of us it takes more time to really understand just how important this is.

GE 4:6 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."

Some of us get frustrated when God does not bless us or give us what we think we deserve, and when that happens we have a choice. We can either resort to sin and get in even more trouble with God, or we can figure out what God wants, and just do it. God is not trying to be mean to us by telling us to get rid of our addictions, He is actually trying to help us and to give us a good life. He knows that we will never be any good to anyone when we run around in a constant state of intoxication. It's like putting sugar in the gas tank of your car, it just won't run right that way. Trust God that as you quit your addiction and live obediently, that God will bless you and He will bring restoration and happiness to your messed up life. Choose blessing and life, rather than a curse and eventual death. God loves you and waits and wants to bless you.

HEB 6:7 Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. 8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.
