Life In The Past Lane

HEB 12:15 See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.

As you begin to walk forward into true freedom from addiction you will be faced with your past and depending on what happened and how it affected you it can generate great bitterness and resentment which can create emotional pain and drive you back toward addiction if you are not careful. So it will be critical to your recovery to not live in the past and to begin to walk in your present because everything will depend on it.

PS 25:7 Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you are good, O LORD.

It will be painful to face the consequences of your actions or the actions of others and you will have plenty of things to get upset about, but if you allow these wounds from the past to dominate your heart and mind then you are going down the road to relapse. You may have been divorced, lost your kids, lost your career, been in jail, lost your health, or many other terrible things, but they must not rule your present.

MT 6:14 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

In order to be free from your past you are going to have to be willing to forgive others and yourself for what went wrong. Remember that you are doing this even more for yourself than for others so press forward. Staying mad at others is like cutting yourself and expecting your enemy to bleed, it will only hurt you. Trust God to punish people later on for what they did wrong and be glad that you are not punished for all you did.

PS 42:5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?

Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and 6 my God.

God will help you to work through your pain if you will trust Him with it. Running back to your addiction to relieve your pain will not heal the wound and it will just create fresh pain to have to heal from. This is your day to stand up and be free so refuse to be a punching bag for demons any longer and allow God to close those old emotional wounds. Life is too short to live in the past lane so walk forward this day.

JER 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
