Hunting and Gathering
Most people who have addiction problems live with a constant sense of feeling insufficient so they are constantly
hunting for more of what they think will help them to feel secure and sufficed so to speak. I call these people "Insuff's"
because they are people in constant need either because of fear and/or a chemical imbalance that keeps them in a constant
state of anxiety and feeling like they are in need of something more. Because of this constant state of craving and feeling
insufficient, Insuff's are always gathering things that give them pleasure and sufficiency or "suff", and like a pack rat
they build up a secret stash and supply somewhere in the house, that they can draw from when they think they need a pleasure
fix.
It isn't always the stuff they are gathering that is what they are after necessarily, it is the ability to gather
and procure what makes them feel secure as well. For example, a person may be a shop-aholic and go out and buy things they
don't need or even already own because it is the act of hunting and gathering that makes them feel powerful, in control, and
secure in knowing they can gather more "suff". Food is another big thing that people will go out an buy just to store up a
lot of that they can secretly feed on in private. You may see a lot of money missing from your account and this is usually
because they are going out and buying things and then coming home and either hiding them or consuming them when nobody is
around.
One thing that can be a real problem for Insuff's are credit cards. Credit cards seem like an endless supply to
all the "suff" you could ever buy or want. But it is obviously a dangerous trap since you can get over your head very quickly
with credit cards. Gathering pleasure to treat fear and old unhealed pain is idolatry since you are trusting in what you are
gathering for your life satisfaction and protection, which is actually God's job, not a pleasure idols job. God will give
us all we need and protect us if we will let go of our idols and trust Him to be in control. When the fear and unhealed pain
are dealt with, the need to go "suff" hunting will also begin to subside as well. God will give you living water that will
satisfy what you are thirsting for.
2CO 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having
all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
PHP 4:12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the
secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I
can do everything through him who gives me strength.
JER 2:13 "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and
have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
JN 4:13 Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks
the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal
life."
