Help for Profanity

MT 15:10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand. 11 What goes into a man's mouth does not make him `unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him`unclean.' "

You may have a problem with profanity but the above scripture can be a good help to stop using it. You see, when we curse, swear, or use profane (dirty) speech we cause ourselves to become unclean before God and man and it not only blocks our relationship with God, but it can drive people away who can tell we smell like a spiritual skunk because we have been defiled or made unclean by our own mouth.

EX 20:7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

Profanity is really just verbal revenge, retaliation, and punishment with our mouth instead of our fists and it shows everyone around us that we do not trust God to protect or vindicate us in life. You may have stopped your mouth from swearing but you are still doing it in your head, but watch out because it will still come out when something bad happens or you feel attacked and want to verbally defend yourself.

MT 12:36 But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."

It seems easy to swear and curse because we feel in control and there doesn't seem to be any real punishment for it from God, but eventually we will have to give an account for everything we have said here on earth. Plus God not hearing our prayers because of our mouth is not good either. People don't like to be around profanity because they feel dirtied by it too so it can hurt our earthly relationships here as well.

EPH 5:4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

I want to encourage you today that you can indeed be free from profanity but you will have to stop sympathizing with the pleasure you get from it, and apparent lack of consequences you don't get from it. I used to do it secretly but ended up saying the "F" word while I was playing Jesus in a large production because I dropped some food on the floor, so I realized it had to go. Let God set you free from all profanity today.

COL 4:6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
